Our installation team makes sure your island works as hard as you do.
{Whether you want a simple prep surface or a full-function island with sink and seating|From a clean base island to a waterfall edge showpiece|Every island project we take on} starts with a proper measurement of your kitchen and a frank conversation about what will actually fit and function well in your space.
A well-proportioned base island adds prep surface, storage, and kitchen presence without complicated trades work. We build to your cabinet line and countertop material specifications.
DetailsA waterfall countertop wraps the countertop material down the island's side to the floor in a continuous slab. This is a high-craft installation requiring precision material cuts and flawless seam matching.
DetailsA seating bar overhang requires proper structural support and the correct overhang depth for the seating height. We engineer the support system to handle real daily load without sagging or cracking.
DetailsAdding a sink to your island requires drain line extension, supply line plumbing, and careful countertop preparation for the sink cutout. We coordinate all plumbing rough-in as part of the island project.
DetailsCode requires GFCI-protected outlets within 6 feet of a kitchen island sink and recommends outlets on islands with any countertop surface. We coordinate electrical rough-in and panel requirements for every island with power.
DetailsA rolling island provides flexible prep space without permanent installation. We build or supply quality freestanding units that match your cabinet finish and countertop material for a cohesive kitchen look.

Everyone wants a kitchen island -- but the planning behind a successful island installation is more exacting than most homeowners realize. Getting the island dimensions, placement, and features right requires attention to several interacting requirements, and cutting corners on any of them creates a kitchen that feels worse to use than it did before the island was added.
Walkway clearance is the most important planning variable and the one most often ignored in kitchen renovation content. The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends a minimum of 42 inches of clearance between the island and any fixed surface -- cabinet, appliance, or wall -- in a one-cook kitchen, and 48 inches when two people regularly cook together. An island that leaves less than 36 inches of clearance is a functional liability: refrigerator and oven doors cannot be fully opened without the person using them blocking the path entirely. We measure every potential island placement against the real clearances of your specific kitchen before recommending a size.
Seating overhangs follow their own requirements. A standard counter-height seating bar at 36 inches requires an overhang of 12 to 15 inches to provide functional knee clearance for seated guests. A bar-height island at 42 inches typically needs 12 inches of overhang for standard bar stools. Overhangs beyond 12 inches require structural support -- either corbels, legs, or a cantilevered support system built into the island structure itself. An unsupported overhang of 15 or more inches will develop visible sag over time as the countertop material deflects under regular use. Our installations are engineered for the long term, not just the day of installation.
Electrical code for kitchen islands is frequently misunderstood. The National Electrical Code requires at least one GFCI-protected outlet for islands with a countertop area of 12 square feet or more. Islands with a sink require GFCI outlets within 6 feet of the sink. Islands with cooktops have their own electrical requirements distinct from standard outlet placement. We review the electrical scope of every island project with the homeowner upfront so there are no surprises about what the permit and inspection process requires. JMT Kitchen Cabinet handles island installations the way they are meant to be done -- with the planning, coordination, and attention to code that ensures your finished kitchen is safe, functional, and built to last.

Minimum walkway clearance around an island for a single-cook kitchen. 48 inches for two-cook households.
The required overhang depth for comfortable seating at counter height. Any overhang beyond 12 inches requires structural support.
NEC requires at least one GFCI outlet on islands with 12 or more square feet of countertop area. Sink islands require GFCI within 6 feet.
Standard base island height is 36 inches. Bar-height islands at 42 inches create a distinct visual separation and require taller seating.
I had already gotten two quotes was how seriously they took the clearance measurements. They showed me that the island size I wanted would have blocked my oven door and refrigerator. The island they recommended is the right size for my kitchen, and now I actually use it every day.
Having a place for the kids to sit while we cook was our main goal and JMT Kitchen Cabinet built it with the right structural support so it does not flex at all. It is solid, the overhang depth is perfect for the stools we bought, and it looks exactly like the photo we showed them.
I was nervous about the plumbing coordination but JMT Kitchen Cabinet handled everything -- the drain line extension, the supply plumbing, the GFCI outlets, the countertop cutout. One point of contact, no chaos. The result is a kitchen I could not have imagined before.
From concept to countertop, JMT Kitchen Cabinet handles every detail of your kitchen island project.
